INSTRUCTIONS
There are three possible ways to search the index:
| 1. |
Browse by Subject: Use this type of search to alphabetically browse the index's list of subject headings. Once you have a particular subject heading that interests you, click on it to see the relevant page citations. |
| 2. |
Search by Word: Within this type of search, there are four different ways to search for particular keywords:
| a. |
All of the words: This search accepts one or more keywords. It will only return subject headings that contain all of the keywords that you typed. |
| b. |
Any of the words: This search accepts one or more keywords. It will return subject headings that contain any of the keywords that you typed. |
| c. |
Exact phrase: Type in the exact phrase that you want. (Do not surround what you type with "quotation marks".) This will return subject headings that contain the phrase (in exact word order). |
| d. |
Advanced search: This kind of search accepts keywords, linked by Boolean operators, such as "AND", "AND NOT", "OR", "OR NOT", and parentheses. If no parentheses are used, in tandem with Boolean operators, "AND" is the default operator. An example of an Advanced Search might be: Cutchogue AND NOT (church OR farm).
Any of the four types of searches can be limited to display citations containing images or correspondence. Searches may also be limited by publication year. Results may then be sorted, either by subject or chronologically. In anything other than an Exact Phrase search, you may use the asterisk (*) symbol to truncate a keyword (up to 5 characters).
E.g., typing "Bel*" will return Belford, Belton, Bellport, and Belle Terre, but not "Bellomont, Earl of".

| 3. |
Browse by Publication Year: Use this type of search to display all of the subject headings (and their page citations) in one of the following ways:
| a. |
Before a particular year |
| b. |
After a particular year |
| c. |
Between two years |
|
Page Citation Format: (Search Results)
Subject headings are followed by year of publication and page numbers of each article cited.
E.g.:
| Cutchogue -- Postmaster --- Case, Benjamin |
1957: 91 |
An "
(L)" following a page number indicates that the article includes
correspondence.
E.g.:
| Comes, Charles Russell -- Cutchogue's Honeymoon Cottage |
1952: 173(L) |
An asterisk "
*" following a page number indicates that the article includes an
image.
E.g.:
| Cutchogue Historical Society |
1990: 109* |
A plus sign "
+" following a page number indicates that the article continues on subsequent pages.
E.g.:
| Cutchogue's Pequash Club -- by E.T. Juckett |
1959: 187+ |
