This page details the availability of individual states' corporate and business filings and their accessibility on the Web. In a few instances only limited information (such as name availability) is retrievable. The majority of the states, however, use their Web presence to disseminate a range of public business records -- and most of them offer access at no charge.

The Corporation and Business Entity Database includes business and not for profit corporations, limited partnerships, limited liability companies and limited liability partnerships, as well as other miscellaneous businesses registered in New York State and in existence as of December 5, 1977. Data provided includes corporate name, executive office, executives, date of initial filing, and address as of filing date. The current status of the entity, active or inactive is provided. In order to find the reason for inactivity, users must call the 1-900-TEL-CORP (835-2677) information line provided by the Department of State. A small charge will appear on your phone bill. See the database's FAQ list for current charges.

North American Industry Classification System (NAICS)
This site presents the new United States Government classification system for industry and business, adopted as of 1997. It also allows you to convert the older Standard Industrial classification (SIC) codes into the new NAICs numbers.

Searchable database with over 12 million U.S. business listings and 100 million residential phone numbers. The residential white pages section has listings for 90 million households and includes a reverse telephone number search. The business section contains directory listings for the businesses as well as basic financial and ownership information. A quick search function lets you search by business name and geography. The custom search feature allows you to search by expanded geography options, business size, yellow pages headings, and various other special selects. In order to search this database from outside the library, you MUST have a Patchogue-Medford Library card. You will be prompted for the barcode from your library card.

Researching Companies Online
This is a business research tutorial that provides step-by-step instruction for finding company and industry information on the Web. There are 13 subject areas, including locating high-level company information, finding sales prospects, and researching company financial information. At the end of the tutorial is a summary of the links and their subject areas, which makes searching easier.

Suffolk County, NY Business Certificates and Corporations
The office of the Suffolk County Clerk has added online searchable databases for over 635,000 business certificates and corporations listed in the county from 1900 forward. The corporations database includes companies that have incorporated in New York State and are doing business in Suffolk. The Business Certificates section includes sole proprietorships, partnerships, and companies "doing business as" in Suffolk. Searches must be performed using the wildcard character %. For example, waldbaum%.

Foundation Directory Online Platinum -- LIB --
Searchable database of over 65,000 U.S. funders, including all known U.S. foundations, direct corporate giving programs, and grantmaking public charities. This database is currently accessible only from computers within the Patchogue-Medford Library.

Guidestar Database of U.S. Nonprofit Organizations
Guidestar provides a national database of over 850,000 non-profit organizations. This page allows you to search their database by a variety of categories including name, location, category, and income range. Search for Long Island organizations by entering a central Long Island zip code and then using one of the zip code radius features.

National Center for Charitable Statistics
The National Center for Charitable Statistics offers access to financial disclosure forms filed by charities with the Internal Revenue Service. These filings, known as Form 990, provide information on a charity's revenues, expenses, board members, and activities. Currently there are over 400,000 of the IRS Forms 990 and 61,000 IRS forms 990-PF, which are filed by private foundations that are not 501(c)(3) entities.

Small Business Development Center at SUNY Stony Brook
Provides free counseling, programs and training seminars in the areas of business planning, funding, e-commerce, and marketing, to name just a few. Offices are located in Stony Brook, with outreach locations in Southampton, Brookhaven National Laboratory, and the Patchogue Chamber of Commerce.
