Available to family day care providers who are registered and/or
certified and living in the Patchogue-Medford School District. This
program consists of nine monthly home visits from a children's librarian
who will conduct a story time. Individual kits with books and suggested
activities will be left for use in the home. Each month a different
story time will be presented and the kit exchanged for a new one.
School-Age Programs
Workshops for school-aged children are offered throughout the year and
during school and summer vacations. The library newsletter contains a
listing of current programs available, eligibility and registration
requirements.
Book Buddies
Trained middle school students volunteer to read to the K - 2nd grade
students, individually or in small groups. This registered program is
offered four times a year.
Summer Reading Clubs
Patchogue-Medford Library annually offers two summer reading clubs. The
first designed for those entering or leaving kindergarten. Those who
are entering second grade and up comprise the second club. Members of
both clubs are invited to a special celebration after the program's
completion in mid-August.
Programs for Parents
Evening parent education programs are held throughout the year. They
include lecture and discussion and are held on week day evenings.
Because topics and days vary, parents are advised to check the library
newsletter (or ask a children's librarian) for current information on
these informative programs. Previous topics have included toilet
training, CPR (Totsaver) for Infants and Children, S.T.E.P.
(Systematic Training for Effective Parenting), Nursery School/Day Care
Fair, Discipline is not a Dirty Word, Toddler Turmoil and our Parent
Connections series.
Unattended Children Policy
The library is a public place. When parents (or caregivers) are visting the Library with
their children, parents (or caregivers) should be aware of their children's behavior and
location. Young children under the age of 9 must not be left unattended except during
specific program times. Young children accompanied by youth under age 12 are considered
unattended.
Parents whose children are old enough to be in the Library alone should be familiar with
Library hours and how long their children may stay. Children may not stay all day
unsupervised. It is not the Library's intention to seek out unattended children but
rather to show concern for their safety and well-being. If children are found unsupervised,
Library staff will first attempt to locate a parent. If this is not possible, the proper
authorities will be called. Library staff are not responsible for unattended children and
will not supervise them.
Libraries may have sudden emergencies that cause them to close without advance warning.
Parents should advise their children on what to do when the Library closes. Information
on places to leave children on a regular or occasional basis is available from a librarian.
