On Monday, September 21, 1998, the Patchogue-Medford Library began an
exciting new program at the library called the Fishing Tackle Loaner
Program. Patrons with a library card (including direct access patrons)
may check out a salt-water fishing rod and reel on their library card
for a three-week loan. The first 100 persons to check out fishing
equipment will also receive a free tackle box.
The program is designed to introduce children and others to the
wholesome outdoor activity of saltwater angling. This is the first
time in this country that salt water gear and tackle have been made
available in this manner. Sponsors for the program include Congressman
Michael Forbes, the National Marine Fisheries Service, NY Fishing
Tackle Trade Association, The NY State Department of Environmental
Conservation, the American Sportfishing Association, the Long Island
Beach Buggy Association, the NY State Sportfishing Federation, and the
Patchogue-Medford Youth Service.
The library has been purchasing books and videos which teach fishing
techniques and plans a series of workshops. Some of the workshops are
aimed at hooking teens on fishing instead of drugs; and plans are being
made for a senior citizen one-to-one teach-in with a youngster. Ideas
are being hatched for displays, contests, posters, and other "fishy"
surprises in partnership with other community organizations.
