American Community Survey

Presents the results of a new annual survey by the U.S. Census Bureau designed to show communities "how they are changing," with comparative demographic data. Currently the survey includes all states, most areas with a population of 250,000 or more, and selected areas of 65,000 or more. The survey is based on 820,000 households nationwide. There are plans to expand the survey to 3 million households for 2004.

They are supported by a number of economics and scholarly organizations. The site hosts numerous bibliographies and datasets for a wide variety of topics in economic history. Particularly useful are databases which allow you to compare the purchasing power of the United States dollar or British pound from the 1700s to the present day. They also maintain a historical database of the inflation rates in both the U.S. and Britain.

FRED2: An Economic Time-Series Database

The Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis presents FRED2, an index of historical economic data series for the U.S. economy. Coverage varies, but many of the series date from the 1940s forward. Data available includes consumer and producer price indexes, monetary supply and interest rates, and exchange rate and balance of payments data.

This site provides access to historical population and socio-economic data from the U.S. federal census from its beginnings in 1790 through to 1960. The database allows you to choose individual or multiple data sets to display in tablular format. Data can also be graphed.

What Was the Exchange Rate Then?

This site allows you to compare historic annual exchange rates for the U.S. dollar versus a variety of foreign currencies for a given year or range of years. First choose the currency you want to compare with the dollar, then select a single year or range of years. Historic coverage varies depending upon the currency, but most European currencies are searchable from the 1910s forward, with most non-Western currencies available from later dates. Comparisons between the dollar and the British Pound are available from 1791 forward.
