The Junior Order United American Mechanics is a fraternal group, founded in Philadelphia in 1853 as the Junior Branch of the United American Mechanics. By 1885 the JR OUAM had become its own independent secret society focusing on protecting the United States from foreigners. They strongly support the public school system. Until recently, in order to join the organization, one had to be male, white, believe in a supreme being, and favor the separation of church and state. In modern times, the Jr. OUAM has changed its rules and now Roman Catholics, Jews, African-Americans, and women are allowed into the organization. In 1980, there were 400 local chapters or “councils” of the Jr. OUAM.

This collection was donated from an unknown source [some decades ago]. It contains newsletters, correspondence, financial documents, proceedings, directories, membership materials, and ephemera for the Farragut Council No. 45 of the Junior Order United American Mechanics from approximately 1942-1968. [Council No. 45 was based in Patchogue, N.Y.] This collection was originally housed in a wooden box with metal fasteners. Also contains a photocopy of pages 1-37 of the History of the Junior Order United American Mechanics, by Reverend M.D Lichliter, which was donated to the Patchogue Medford Library by the National Council of the JR OUAM on April 4, 2005.
[Note: The collection below constitutes a sometimes abbreviated, item-level description. Individual items are organized by type or theme, in a series of manila accordion folders, to be housed in an archival box. The original wooden box, with metal fasteners is included.]
