John Bowne, 1627-1695, is best-known for his defiance of Pieter Stuyvesant's edict establishing the Dutch Reformed Church in New Netherlands colony.  Along with the protest resulting in the Flushing Remonstrance, he permitted his house to be used for a Quaker  meeting, was arrested, and sent to Holland, where his successful legal  defense of the principle of religious freedom of worship,  established the precedent for not only New Netherlands but what would eventually become New York colony and State, as well as setting a principle for the United States.
