Citius - Altius - Fortius
What's the significance of the rings, and what does the motto mean?
The Olympics Games, as we know them today, have been around since 1896, but, in fact, date as far back as Ancient Greece in the eighth century B.C.E., almost 3000 years ago.
Today, the Olympic Games are a wonderous contest of skill, athleticism and diplomacy where language barriers and borders between nations disappear, and people of different nationalities and ideologies, for two weeks, come together to engage in a celebration of human spirit and endurance and become unified through sport.
The games in Beijing, commencing on August 8th, mark the 29th modern Olympiad.
What follows is a listing of some of the titles at the Patchogue-Medford Library and links on the World Wide Web for learning about the Olympic Games, past and present, as well as keeping up-to-date with the latest from Beijing.
