Our Featured Database
This month our featured database is Mergent Online, the most detailed and comprehensive global company database available. Mergent Online offers coverage of 15,000+ U.S. public companies and 20,000+ international companies, including many that have merged or gone out-of-business since 1995. Mergent Online lets you research up to 15 years of detailed financial statements, create customized reports, and download most data into software such as Excel. Over 115,000 annual reports, 10,000+ summary FactSheets express reports for U.S. and Canadian companies, and 4,000+ analyst equity reports on large and mid-cap companies are also available.
Mergent Online is available for use at the library, or for Patchogue-Medford cardholders, from home, with their library card barcode.

- Listing of top competitors for each company, with easy links to their own individual profiles.
- 10,000+ FactSheets Express one page equity reports on U.S. and Canadian companies with weekly updates.
- 4,000+ analyst equity research reports with buy/sell/hold recommendations for many large and mid-cap companies.
- Hundreds of industry reports providing overviews of major sectors of the world's economy for North America and other regions.
- Country Profiles. Brief factual overviews for most nations of the world, with enhanced economic and demographic profiles available for the major world economies.
Why Would I Want To Use It?
Mergent Online is the most detailed and comprehensive financial database available to the library user. Rich and detailed textual descriptions - the hallmark of all Mergent publications - offer a wealth of detail on items including business description, history, property, subsidiaries, officers and directors, long-term debt and capital stock. Financial statements are presented in "as-reported" form and are in native currencies.
Subscribers can easily access reports on companies based around the world, searching by company name or ticker symbol, or searching across all global boundaries to find companies that match specific financial and textual search criteria.
- Access to Wall Street consensus earnings estimates on all companies in the database followed by at least one Wall Street analyst.
- The 20,000+ international companies covered represent 95% of the non-U.S. global market capitalization.
- Mergent Online holds the full business descriptions, histories and financial statements for U.S. companies that were acquired, went bankrupt, liquidated or merged out of existence from 1996 onward. Mergent also offers the last available financial information on non-U.S. companies in similar circumstances.
How to Use the Database
To get started in Mergent Online click on Enter Mergent Online on the left side of the main page.
There are various searches you can perform:
Basic Search
The basic search lets you find companies in two ways:
Individually -- by company name, ticker symbol, CUSIP, or Dun's Number
Classification -- by SIC Code, NAICS Code, MIC, by stock index, or country

Advanced Search
Lets you search for companies that meet various criteria, such as geography, executive or director name, financial ratios, stock price criteria and more. You may save your advanced search criteria by clicking on the "Save Search" button at the bottom of the page and entering your email address.

EDGAR Search
Searches EDGAR filings back to 1993.
Industry Reports Search
View reports based on sectors and countries.
Equity Reports Search
Search on the 4,000+ companies with buy/sell/hold recomendations.
Country Profile Search
Alows you to access the basic and enhanced country profiles.
What Kind of Information is Available in a Typical Company Record?
The image below shows the extensive information that is available for a typical company report in Mergent Online.

Once a company is displayed, click on the gray tabs to see the information that is available for that particular company.
The Create Reports feature lets you build your own customized reports. Most reports can be created in PDF, Word, Excel, or HTML format.

Research tab lets you see insider holdings, insider trades and top institutional holdings for each company.
Tear Sheets lets you view the FactSheets Express and/or Equity Report if one is available for the selected company.
Industry Reports will allow you to see which of the Industry Reports contain information about your chosen company.
