The programs and services listed below are available to our senior population. Seasonal services are also listed and verification of dates and times can be located in the Newsletter.

 

 

AARP Defensive Driving- Take this defensive driving course, offered to adults 50 years of age or older, for a 10% insurance discount. This course runs throughout the year. Please check with the Newsletter for sign-up dates.

 

 

AARP Tax Counseling- This program runs from February through the middle of April, and requires an appointment. Appointments may be made in January by calling 654-4700 X 242.

 

 

Blood Pressure Screening- A free program to keep track of a person’s blood pressure numbers. The second Tuesday of each month from 10a.m.-12noon.

 

 

Computer Basics One-On-One- Need assistance with learning the basics of computers, such as: using the mouse and keyboard, sending e-mail, getting on the Internet, and copying and saving material? Sign up for assistance with our savvy senior tutor. For app’t call 654-4700 X242

 

 

Influenza immunization Clinic- Flu shots conducted by the Suffolk County Department of Health Services. The clinic is usually held during the latter part of October. Please see the Newsletter for exact dates.

 

 

Large Print Books- The Library has more than 3,000 large print books, designed for the ease of reading. The collection also contains newly published best sellers. Our bi-monthly Newsletter can be printed in large print by request.

 

 

Outreach Services to Homebound Patrons- This service is available to District residents who are permanently or temporarily homebound. Books or dvd’s/videos are chosen by a librarian based on criteria established by the homebound person. The materials are delivered by mail and returned in the same manner.

Senior Advocate- This is a walk-in program. The advocate will assist senior citizens with applications for SSI, Medicare/Medicaid/medigap concerns, senior ID cards, HEAP benefits, and other services. Dates are listed in the Newsletter.

 

 

Senior Resource Area- A location near the Side Entrance specifically designed for our senior population. Includes reference and circulating books, magazines, videos, flyers and brochures, health and financial letters.

 

 

Talking Books Plus- A free library service for Suffolk County residents who cannot hold or read conventional print books. The collection contains thousands of professionally recorded books/magazines available to be borrowed. These and the equipment needed to use them can be picked up at the Library or mailed to the patron.

Our Library building provides access and accommodation for individuals who are physically challenged.

 

Our inter-library loan program offers patrons with visual disabilities the ability to borrow videos which feature narrative descriptions.

 

 

PML offers patrons a Com-Tek listening system for anyone with an auditory disability, and a CCTV (closed caption tv) for patrons with poor vision. The Com-Tek system must be ordered in advance.

 

In addition, the Town of Brookhaven offers Senior Citizen Services. A brief description and telephone numbers are listed below.

 

    Helpline- A telephone reassurance for isolated or homebound Seniors. 451-9140.

 

 Jitney Transportation- For seniors who have no other means of transportation to medical facilities.Also provides transportation to shopping areas. Fee based. 451-6126

 

              Adult Day Care- This program is designed for the frail and elderly who need assistance in activities of daily living. 

 

    Brief Respite Program- This program provides temporary custodial care for up to four hours,  one or two days per week, during Town business hours. 9AM-4PM   451-9191
